Chapter: Comics
|
I really do, it’s pretty much my favourite sport.
By the way, I’m thinking of relaunching the comic, (i.e. designing a new look-website and deciding on a name that isn’t just my own). It’ll probably involve halting updates for a couple of months fairly soon. I’ll keep you posted.
If you’re looking for a web address might I suggest “Luke’s URL”?
http://www.LukesURL.com
It would be perfect.
I thought that was what this was for the longer than I’d like to admit. In fact I still read it that way.
“I no tennis”?
(I don’t watch tennis, so to me, that’s a “no”.)
I didn’t no either, then I read the explanation below.
Still 0 the alt text better, though.
“The score of games within a set is counted in the ordinary manner, except when a player or team has a score of no games it is read as “love”….
The origin of the use of “love” for zero is also disputed. It is possible that it derives from the French expression for “the egg” (l’œuf) because an egg looks like the number zero.[2][3] This is similar to the origin of the term “duck” in cricket, supposedly from “duck’s egg”, referring to a batsman who has been called out without completing a run. “Love” is also said to derive from l’heure “the hour” in French[citation needed]. A third possibility comes from the Dutch expression iets voor lof doen, which means to do something for praise, implying no monetary stakes.[4] Another theory on the origins of the use of “love” comes from the acceptance that, at the start of any match, when scores are at zero, players still have “love for each other”.[5]”

The last theory somewhat matches Luke’s alt text 🙂
