Hmm. As it seems these states aren’t going to re-name themselves to fit my comic (how rude!). I’ve changed the spellings above.
As a non-american, I do not understand this joke. Is there something wrong with the three omitted states?
It doesn’t have anything to do with the particular states he left out. Rather, the joke is that if you don’t remember some of the states, you still declare that you remembered all the states because you don’t recognize the ones that you didn’t remember. It can also be thought of as a pun on “recognize”, since “recognize” can mean both “identify” and “acknowledge.”
I’m curious on Luke’s spelling choice. I had thought that “recognise” was the spelling typically used in the UK, while Americans tend to use “recognize.” Guess not.
Considering my record, if the words I write are a valid spelling anywhere in the English speaking world, this should be considered a bonus.

I’d heard that Kansas had annexed Tennessee, rendering it a vassal of the Sunflower State. However, it appears my intelligence was flawed, and the map has been updated accordingly.

I actually wouldn’t mind if my state no longer got to be in the US. I love my state, but the US? Eh. I’d go for a Canada any old day. Deity preserve the Queen!
Why is there a North and South Dakota, and a North and South Carolina, but no East Virginia?
Commenting that question on a webcomic written by a British guy probably won’t get me the best answer, huh.
I think it has to do with when they became states. Carolina was a British province, then it split before independence. Dakota was a territory, but it split by the time it became a state. Virginia was already a state during the Civil War when it split, so perhaps they had already gained an identity for themselves as Virginians, and did not want to give up their name.

During the civil war, Virginia joined the confederates, but the western part supported the union, so they split.
95% of the population couldn’t get to half of what you have labeled, and that’s being generous. Especially true of the “lower portion” that fly that OTHER flag - also known as flag of the Confederacy of Dunces (a great book too).
