I was going to insert a joke about being in love with someone ‘mushroom shaped’ but honestly, everything I thought was far too obscene.

The punchline is in panel two, so the last two panels are unnecessary. Just saying.
I think those panels are necessary. If the comic ended at panel two, I would guess that Toad is heterosexual and wouldn’t want Mario, and the joke is that Mario was going to rape Toad. The comic becomes sweeter and more absurdly funny when we hear that Toad “never dared to dream” of Mario liking him.
