Some extra info:
* There is at least one solution – possibly several.
* White pawns advance “up”, black pawns “down”. You do not need to worry about promotion of pawns on the end rows.
First person to solve this wins the original art to the comic!
UPDATE: Long story short, I am a complete idiot, and I originally made the puzzle impossible (it should now work).
The prize has been awarded for this entry

P.S. I’ve deleted the comments which essentially document how much an idiot I was. My sincerest aplogies to those whose time I wasted.
Which direction is the pawn advancement (e.g. white down, black up), because it changes which squares are viable places. If it is omni directional (pawns may attack either up or down screen in diagonal directions) then it is much simpler, and i believe actually possible. Either way, goodbye next half hour.
@Coyote Trax
As I drew this I thought “I hope no-one takes this as a racial commentary”. I can assure everyone that I’m not board game racist. Some of my best friends are chess boards.
it seems to me that the people most “concerned” about something being racist, are the biggest racists of them all. I never even considered this to be a race thing, and lo and behold - comments about how this is somehow about interracial couples. You who try and seek out stereotypical things in everyday life (such as the chess board being darker…) are some of the most disgusting people I can imagine. how many things can I come across anything with comments and it be about racial issues? mostly because you are attention whores who seem to thrive on stirring things up.
@charles I can vouch for Coyote being a decent guy. I think lots of us comic artists have minds which deliberately /try/ and seek out false patterns and conclusions that are not actually there, as often this makes for jokes.
@charles: calm down, han solo. you’re not fooling anybody with your hero act, take off the leather jacket and the sunglasses.
You’re all such hotshots that whenever a completely innocent comment is made, you have to attack it as racist, just to prove how progressive and tolerant you are. Let it go, this is the internet, if you don’t like a joke, calm down and stop trying to impress yourselves.
If you ever make any more of these puzzles, I’d want to see them compiled into a booklet. I know some people who would pay for such puzzles.
@Anon: not quite, but close
Well, looks like I’m late to the discussion, if anything, it SUPPORTS interracial (or intergame) marriage, as it obviously makes it superior to the other two, taking the best elements of each and combining them. And yes, I realize that the first one was probably made as a joke, lol.
Quick, send a copy to Will Shortz!
This could be a new craze … or at least a one-shot in the Sunday New York Times Magazine section or possibly Games magazine!

If anything, this comic proves that inter-racial relationships should be banned.
Since when are you a member of the BNP propaganda division? 😛

@Mo: I think a Chess board is the same race as that guy from that original series Trek episode. Remember that one? Ah, good stuff.

I never liked Sudoku. After the first puzzle I worked out how to complete them and they all instantaneously lost their appeal.
This racial ****.
Luke you’re mental

What are pawns doing in the 8th row?
oh gosh. I should just check out Kakuro. It’s way easier 😀
One of the kings is already in check!
I love it! Anon: You need to place another piece to block the check.
Perhaps there’s a solution publish’d later, perhaps not, I’ve not check’d (pun not intended) yet, but…
—SPOILER ALERT—
…
—keep scrolling—
…
—nearly there—
…I got the following, presuming standard Sudoku rules apply & that White plays upwards:
White:
Ka2, b4, c9, d6, e7, f1, g5, h3, i8
Ra8, b1, c6, d5, e2, f7, g3, h4, i9
Ba7, b6, c3, d9, e5, f2, g1, h8, i4
Pa4, b3, c7, d2, e6, f8, g9, h5, i1
Black:
Ka6, b7, c2, d3, e4, f9, g8, h1, i5
Pa1, b5, c8, d4, e9, f3, g6, h2, i7
(yeah, my spoiler whitespace came out even smaller than I thought it would)
Good thing there aren’t any knights…
