Hey all,
So Alternatives to the Fail Whale is now complete and we’re back in the regular groove. A little maths joke to start us off seems about right.
A couple of things:
- I keep on putting it off, but I’ve been meaning to redesign the site for a while now. While I’ve got your attention, any particular things/features you’d like to see on a redesigned site?
- One thing I want to do more of is link to a few more comics. For example recently I discovered the excellent Jackie Rose which you should totally read. Obviously it’s a little pointless me linking to already super-established comics like xkcd etc., so please share with me your favourite comics that not everyone knows about! I’ll check them out and share my favourites!
Peace,
L
As far as comics are concerned, I’ll just browse my overstocked comic-labelles-RSS-feed-folder, and proclaim the following to be undoubtedly awesome:
-SMBC (http://www.smbc-comics.com/) /Come on, everybody knows Zach Weiner.
-Byron Pinkleton (http://www.byronpinkleton.com) /Perverty and stuff.
-Snowflakes (http://www.snowflakescomic.com) /Cute story, pretty frightening, actually.
-Cyanide & Happiness (http://www.explosm.net) /They’re bad. It’s fun.
-Edmund Finney’s Quest to Find the Meaning of Life (http://eqcomics.com) (Highly recommended for awesome storytelling)
-Jesus & Mo (http://www.jesusandmo.net) /Thinkabouts about religion
-Technotuesday (http://www.technotuesday.com/) /Satire about society and technology
And so many more I don’t want to spam your comments-area with.
But I intend to show some of them on my tremendously well known “I’ll show you comics”-Project

Don’t really know how established they are but here are my suggestions:
Bug - bugcomic.com -> hugely funny
Romantically Apocalyptic - romanticallyapocalyptic.com -> such an amazing amount of work goes into a “stupid” (as in “good”) joke!
Optipess - optipess.com -> at times macabre, often wordless, great ideas from norway!
Cock & Bull - cocknbull.net -> sadly on hiatus but the archives are a riveting read!
Imy - imycomic.com -> sweet and funny comic from Sweden about a rock’n'roll-girl and her shinanigans…
Great suggestions Don! I’m reading three of those already but I’ll check the other two out!
Can’t help but noticing how most of your math jokes are on trigonometry.
Maybe you should take a look at http://en.juanelo.net - it’s the English language version of a Chilean webcomic which is very popular in Latin America. The English site is a relatively new thing so it doesn’t have a huge readership yet, maybe you could help to spread the word?
Disclosure: I have a vested interest, since I do the translations from Spanish… #;-)
A few you might not know: E-merl, John & John, Red Meat, Li’l Nyet and Rock, Paper, Cynic.
huh, seems like my last comment didn’t make it through O.o? [Comment from Luke: Was in the Spam folder for some reason, but not any more]
Well, let’s try again:
- SMBC (www.smbc-comics.com)/ for nerdy, geeky, mathy, whateverly hilariousness
- Edmund Finney (http://eqcomics.com)/ for great storytelling and really likable characters and such.
- Technotuesday (www.technotuesday.com)/ for satire about people and technology
- Reginald & Beartato (http://nedroid.com)/ For fun and stuff. reminded me of beaver & steve.
and many more, but I’m afraid the comment won’t make it if it’s too long
Of course, Edmund Finney! Good call.
Absolutely! I think I’ve linked to Edmund Finney here a couple of times. In my opinion it’s one of the top five comics on the ‘net.
I can’t think of any features the site really needs…
In terms of suggestions for lesser known good comics, I have a couple:
Happle Tea: Well-written mythology jokes, mostly gag-a-day
http://www.happletea.com/
Alex’s Guide: Funny new journal-ish comic by the person who did Garanos
http://www.alexsguide.net/
The hiatus does not exist. I did not find Jesus during the hiatus. The hiatus is not the monkey god.. The hiatus causes a rash. The hiatus ate my homework. The hiatus is not god. I miss the hiatus. I do not miss the hiatus.
Nobody Scores! (http://nobodyscores.loosenutstudio.com/) is one of my favorites. It calls itself “a little comic about inevitable disaster,” although most of its comics are twenty-panel tales of protracted failure and calamity. It’s quite well-drawn (especially where coloring is concerned) and it’s manically, cynically hilarious.
Another favorite is Blank It (http://blankitcomics.com/), which starts out as basically Waiting for Godot: the Webcomic and quickly descends into bizarre surrealism of the purple-floods-and-rocket-bugs variety. Crazy, clever stuff.
